PLATTERS APPEAR AT THE BACKYARD
July 09, 2005

Backyard pub: Platters

PRESS RELEASE by Backyardpub.com

The crowd that packed the Backyard Pub & Grill, Sri Hartamas to see soloist Bala on Thursday, July 7th, got an unexpected bonus.

Famed R & B and doo-wop vocal group The Platters, fresh from a show at the Shangri-La's, dropped by at about 11 pm.

After tucking into a sumptuous meal served hot from our kitchen, four of the five Platters who showed up, namely, Donne Radford, Charlotte Eckstein, Rich M. Jimmerson and Mike Davis, were soon rocking in their seats from all the action on stage.

Into Bala's second set of inimitable medleys of husky covers, singer Vijay David showcased his vocal ability with a version of the funky Commodores' hit "Brickhouse". Guitarist and composer Colin Jansen also took to the stage to taunt the Platters to bring it on.

Just after midnight, the Platters' Charlotte, who was already on her feet dancing by then, joined our local heroes on stage. The tall, strapping Rich then showed he was also up for the challenge with his baritone styling, before lead vocalist Donne joined in the fun for a flawless rendition of "Mustang Sally".

"It was a magical night -- an unrehearsed free concert from some world-class professionals! It just goes to show at the Backyard we're full of surprises," said Backyard owner Jerry Chong.

The Platters did not perform any of their hits like The Great Pretender, Only You and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, but instead let guitarists Bala and Colin lead them through a tapestry of hits from the 60s to the 90s including "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", "Play the Funky Music (Whiteboy)", "Knock on Wood", "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love", "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" and quirkily the 1986 Mexico World Cup anthem "Hot, Hot, Hot".

"Everyone there whisked out their digital cameras and mobile phones to take pictures," added Jerry. "There was real camaraderie on stage and the interplay between our regular musicians - Bala, Vijay, Colin and Edmund Anthony - and the Platters was just superb. We all had a really good time."

The sheer talent and brilliance on stage that night made it a memorable night for Backyard patrons that stayed on.

One patron Paramjit Singh remarked: "I'm glad we still have a real pub where we can enjoy great live music and Backyard never fails to amaze me. It's an unpretentious place, and always full of surprises. Just like tonight."
