MR FLAMENCO MEETS MR GAMBUS:
A SPECIAL PRESENTATION
Mar 16, 2005
|
PRESS RELEASE by Backyardpub.com
The Backyard Pub and Grill is proud to announce a special music presentation by flamenco guitarist Peter Dickson
and jazz virtuoso Farid Ali aka "Mr Gambus" on Wednesday, March 23rd.
The night promises to be an exciting showcase of magnificent guitaring skills by two experienced masters of their craft.
The music kicks off at 9.30pm with a solo performance by Peter, followed by Farid, and
backed by a band comprising David 'Awa' Yee on bass, John Thomas Jr on drums and Eric Li on keyboards.
Peter Dickson is an accomplished flamenco and jazz acoustic guitarist with ten albums to his credit.
He was born in Bangalore, India, of English parents, and started his professional music career at the age of
thirteen and has since travelled and performed in Europe, India, Japan and Australia.
Peter has been described as "Australia's fastest guitarist" with impeccable technique and emotion,
executing complex lines with artistic integrity and precision, and surprising every now and then
with percussive drumming on the guitar body.
This gifted musician is currently on tour promoting his solo album "Alone with You". Peter's compositions reflect
the years of immersion in varied styles including Latin, Spanish, Indian and French gypsy with noted jazz inflections.
Peter's first claim to fame was a hit record entitled "Flamenco Falsetas" with partner Juan Martinez in 1996 which
sold over 60,000 copies in Australia.
The success of the album introduced Peter to legendary Australian "finger stylist" Tommy Emmanuel, with whom he
did three live appearances, and also supported on national tours.
Farid Ali is a well-known jazz guitarist in the region who has recently taken to the Malay lute or gambus as his
instrument of choice.
Farid has participated in over 40 jazz festivals around the world, and was the lead guitarist for group
"Face First" at the Barn Thai Jazzaurant. For the past 15 years, he has performed
and recorded with many well-known names including Ernie Watts, Eric Marienthal, Bobby McFerrin, Steve Thornton,
Jeremy Monteiro, Lee Jeung Sik and Randy Bernsen.
Besides performing, Farid lectures on jazz improvisation at the University Institute
Technology Mara in Malaysia - where he has taught over 200 guitarists in the past 12 years.
He is currently toying with the idea of pursuing a doctorate on the 3000-year-old gambus.
On his website MrGambus.com, Farid says: "Music is a gift from God. Those who choose to make a living from it,
should do it with love and sincerity, for it is only then that we will be able to realize the power music has in our lives."
