WRAPPED AROUND HIS FINGERS
Oct 12, 2004
|
Update by Backyardpub.com/Press Release
Guitar virtuoso Paul Ponnudorai dazzled the audience last Wednesday for
the kick-off of the inaugural Jairus Anthony Annual Music Festival at the
Backyard Pub & Grill.
Paul mesmerized the attentive crowd with his every song, including
numbers like Police's Wrapped Around Your Finger, James Taylor's Fire and
Rain, Stevie Wonder's Superstition, Franki Valli's My Eyes Adored You and
Van Morrison's Have I Told You Lately. The last was dedicated to his wife
-- who turned away at one moment to dry an eye.
Paul's talent is the way he strips away the clichéd renderings of the usual
cover and imbues it in his own style. His appearances in the local pub
circuit these days are so rare that - when he does show - any price is worth
the price of admission.
For the record, the Backyard Pub is not charging any cover for the
first-ever Jairus Anthony Music Festival 2004, so the packed house got
to enjoy his music for nothing more than a nominal drink at the bar.
Earlier, guitar duo Julian Mokhtar and Aznan Aziz, known as the The
Corn Cake Kings came on to warm up the crowd with renditions of various
country and blues tunes while entertainer/musician Rafique Rashid
came on for two crowd-pleasing sets, including favourite parodies
Leprosy -- a take on the Beatles' Yesterday.
As usual at the Backyard, several musicians came unannounced and
performed jams on stage including mystery guest Alphonse Jerome of La Viva with
some reggae standards and full-bodied Sherman Tan with some funky numbers.
Powerhouse singer Vijay David lent his talents with his mouth harp
while a regular Backyard guest and flamenco dance instructor showed up
with her castanets to join in the jam!
Last week's 120 photos are available at the Photos section of backyardpub.com.

ABOUT THE JAIRUS MUSICFEST
The musicfest was named after Jairus Anthony, a musician who performed in
various pubs in Malaysia, most recently at the Backyard Pub. Jairus succumbed
to pancreatic cancer in July 2004.
The idea for the musicfest was conceived by Jerry Chong, owner of
Backyard Pub & Grill, to keep alive the memory of Jairus and everything he
stood for.
Although Jairus parlayed his talents for over two decades in the local pub
circuit, he never received the recognition and industry accolades he
deserved. It was only after his illness was diagnosed that a charity album
entitled "Jairus & Friends" featuring his talent was finally recorded live
at the Backyard pub through the kindness of fellow musicians, fans and
friends.
The musicfest is aimed as a platform for the most talented local
musicians to show off their abilities at a single venue every year and
attract recording companies.
The first Jairus MusicFest is sponsored by Backyard Pub & Grill and co-
sponsored by Guinness Anchor Bhd, Lloyds TSB, Sledgehammer Communications and The Admine.
It will be held for seven weeks, every Wednesday on Oct 06 to Nov 17.
