FESTIVE CHEER AT THE BACKYARD

UPDATE

THIS WEEK:The Sun Music Festival, Sept 6-11

The Sun Music Festival kicked off with a blast last Saturday. Many new-comers to the pub were blown away by the ability of Vijay David, Albert Sirimal and Bada, our Saturday night band.

Freddie Fernandez showed up with his wards Edlin, Zarina, Fitri and Azizi who performed in Backyard for the first time. Azizi especially showed his showmanship by gamely inviting guests from the floor on the stage and dancing and interacting with them.

His rendition of Lionel Ritchie's Truly while he wiped a tear from the "sporting" lady on stage seem unrehearsed and swooned the ladies in the crowd.

Also on hand was the crew from Malaysia.TV that webcasted the event live on the Internet, another first for Backyard.

The momentum continues throughout this week with two new acts as well as our four regular bands.

WHAT'S UP THIS WEEK:

MONDAY, Sept 6:
MINUS-1: This band came together at the Backyard Pub and first performed on Merdeka Eve. They comprise Simon Justin Leo, brothers Edmund and Gerard Anthony and Justin Wah. Their music covers jazz, retro, blues and rock.

TUESDAY, Sept 7:
NAZZMAZZ: Formed in November 1999, this duo comprises Nazam on lead guitar, vocalist and MIDI and Mas, lead vocalist and percussionist. They have performed at numerous hotels and clubs throughout the country. Their music covers various genres including blues, jazz, rock and pop.

WEDNESDAY, Sept 8:
AMIZAN & LEONARD:This duo have been together for only eight months but are a crowd-pleaser and combine well for classic songs from 70s to the 90s and occasionally surprise with a current hit from the charts.

THURSDAY, Sept 9:
VIJI & FASY: Viji and Fasy are probably the most under-rated duo in the country. Viji, the veteran journeyman of the local pub scene, and Fasy on the electric guitar are a powerful blend of raw talent and ability that harkens back to the guitar-driven days of 70s.

Expect some Deep Purple, CCR, Bob Dylan, Santana, Muddy Waters, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Simon & Garfunkel and James Taylor.

FRIDAY, Sept 10:
Music: JERICHO: This versatile trio comprise: Jason, as lead singer and acoustic guitarist, Colin on electric guitar and Raymond on keyboards. All three can hold their own as soloists but together they really rock the place on Fridays.

SATURDAY, Sept 11:
ALBERT, VIJI & BADA: Albert Sirimal, Vijay David and percussionist Bada, formerly from Headwind, play music from 60s to the 90s including rhythm & blues, rock, funk and jazz and when Vijay is in the mood anything from rap to opera.

Expect some mellow rock and light and easy numbers in the early set, and some raunchier, rousing stuff as the night proceeds.
