JAIRUS ANTHONY MUSIC FEST

The Backyard Pub & Grill is proud to announce the launch of the inaugural Jairus Anthony Musical Festival 2004.

To be held every Wednesday for six weeks beginning in October, the festival will showcase the country's best guitarists and percussionists and provide a platform for young and up-and-coming songwriters to strut their stuff.

"It is a shame local musicians do not get the platform they deserve to show off their incredible talent. We want to make this an annual affair for the most talented local musicians in the country to play at a single venue and attract recording companies," said Backyard owner Jerry Chong.

Chong said the idea for the musicfest germinated after the loss of Jairus Anthony in July from pancreatic cancer. A highly respected singer and guitarist, who parlayed his talents for over two decades in the local pub circuit, Jairus never received the recognition and industry accolades he deserved. It was only after his illness was diagnosed that a live tribute album featuring his talent was finally recorded through the kindness of fellow musicians, fans and friends.

"I decided the festival should be in memory of Jairus because he exemplified the kind of musician we plan to showcase. He was dedicated to his craft and had a humble and warm personality, and was an inspiration to other musicians, and to everyone he touched with his fragile voice and unique ability," said Chong.

Backyard Pub is currently in the midst of securing sponsors for the festival and has already signed on top-billers such as Paul Ponnudorai, Rafique Rashid, Albert Sirimal and Vijay David.

Wednesday nights promise to be rollicking fun at the Backyard in Taman Sri Hartamas with at least three acts a night for four hours of great music. New and promising talents will be descending to the pub to make their debuts and will be given a chance to perform their original numbers for the first time ever.

The musicfest kicks off at 9pm, on the first Wednesday of October 2004.
