Chapter 0. PRELUDE (A Cleansing)

1994 (Unknown time and location):

The Witness saw the four, mocking and unrepentant, held down by silver chains, staked through the heart, disemboweled, decapitated, set ablaze, bones ground to a fine dust, mixed with fresh blood from a desecrated white chicken, sacred hill rice wine.

Poured into four mortar blocks, cast in lead and committed to an eternity of blackness and cold in the deepest locatable undersea trench, farthest from maritime activity.

(All but one Witness involved in the cleansing were never seen again.)

Chapter 1. THE SECOND OCCURRENCE (Return)

4 January 2003, 101.3 Deg East, 3.4 Deg North. 12 pm:

The sky was a mass of boiling asphalt that noon. A murder of crows none had ever seen the likes of, hundreds of thousands of wings beating thunderclaps on breasts. A rain of black feathers, excrement and blood.

And through the winged eclipse came the four, shimmering holes in a sea of darkness. They had returned.

Behind, more came.

The sky fell amidst the screams.

As they approached.

And sang.

Chapter 2. ANALYSIS

Little is known of the four and what happened before the Cleansing, and the First Occurrence. It is believed that they once led normal lives and even had names; Rafil, Jack, Nuhi and Nazrul.

It is said they were once musicians. Weaving their own original aural tapestry, inspired by the likes of Tom Waits, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Hendrix, Clapton, Lennon and The Cure.

They would seldom play songs written by others, and when they did the others would look on with venomous hate.

Go to http://www.360dhr.com for live reports and updates on the four.

Vernon and Fats - the co-founders of the now defunct T-Junction have been in the entertainment business for over 30 years. Vernon, the spokesman for the duo, is often called the Rod Stewart of Malaysia. Fats (Paran) plays the bass and programmes all the group's repertoire ranging from music of the 60s, 70s, and the 80s.

They also cover some the latest songs that are often requested. Over the years they have played in several nightspots in the Klang Valley and have been requested by certain pubs and clubs for repeat performances.

Currently performing at the Ol Skool Bistro in PJ on Mondays since its opening in August 2005, they are also doing regular Wednesday gigs at Paradise in SS3. Since April 2005, they have been at the PJ Club performing alternate Friday engagements.

Past performances include Conlay Club, Tropicana Golf & Country Club, Seasons Bangsar, Metro Klang, D'Tavern Port Klang, Backyard Pub, Bar Poison, PD Yacht Club and many other private functions.

Don't miss Vernon and Fats performing at Backyard this Valentine's Feb 14th, 2007.

Vijay David is a showman extraordinaire. His vocal ability never fails to amaze audiences and he is highly-regarded among his peers.

His career spans more than 20 years performing with various bands in the local circuit. A highlight of his career was winning the 1989 Carlsberg Top of the Pubs contest, which spread word of his performances at the nondescript Yuyi Kitchen with the duo Remy and Martin.
Since then, Vijay has played at almost every known venue for live music from Klang Valley to Ipoh, Penang, Malacca, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Singapore. Some of the more famous places include Hard Rock Cafe, Barn Thai Jazzaraunt and Titus Blues Avenue in Kuala Lumpur, and Aubrey's, Fat Frogs Cafe and The Tavern in Singapore.

He has also shone in a variety of roadshows and concerts across the country including the F1 Toyota Roadshow, National Panasonic Music Extravaganza and Carlsberg MusicFest.

Vijay is also behind some of the most famous jingles heard on TV and radio, and has sang in sessions with the likes of Jamal Abdillah, Ramlah Ram, Shima, Ella, Elaine Kang, Sara Loo, DJ Dave, Fauziah Latiff, Khatijah Ibrahim, Michael Veerapen, Mac Chew, Jenny Chin, Lewis Pragasam, Paul Ponnudorai and late Sudirman Haji Arshad.

Vijay has forged a rock-solid trio with Albert Sirimal and Bada and they perform at Backyard on Saturdays. They also play at Waikiki on Mondays.

Viji is the veteran journeyman of the local pub scene. He says he's "seen it all, done it all" and nobody will dispute that. Viji has performed solo for 15 years, collaborated with various others -- most successfully with Alex Peters for the inimitable Flower Power!! -- and also once owned a pub called Concept in Damansara.

With new partner Fasy on the electric guitar, Viji has re-emerged with a powerful blend of his growly voice, scintillating solos and a repertoire that harks back to the guitar-driven days of 70s.

Viji and Fasy are probably the most under-rated duo in the country. Most patrons of Backyard find themselves blown away by their tight combination, Fasy's energetic playing and some surprise lesser-known blues and mellow rock numbers.

Fasy has garnered a popular following of late as a soloist and with his band Playin December. He hails from a musical family from the Maldives and first came to Malaysia in 1996 as a student. He has two self-recorded albums on the market called Cruising and Fasy: A Compilation, which are available at the Backyard counter.

Expect some Deep Purple, CCR, Bob Dylan, Santana, Muddy Waters, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Simon & Garfunkel and James Taylor. (updated Oct 5th, 2005)

Life, it is said is all about living your own dreams. For the Zarsadias brothers – Hector James & Chester Paul, their dreams are becoming a reality. Ever since they were 10, both Hector & Chester have had only one thing in their minds – music. Even at that age, they knew exactly what they wanted to do – to entertain people with music.

It is no surprise then, that the lads have this passion for music. Their father, Hilary Patrick is himself a musician during his heyday. With musical genes running through, it is no surprise that the Zarsadias brothers are themselves continuing the legacy.

It all started when they used to see their parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents enjoying themselves dancing the night away to the old tunes at parties. The siblings quickly realised that the joy on the faces of their loved ones was something money could not buy.

Both Hector and Chester had their first lesson in music at the age of seven, when their father taught them the guitar. Hector recalled that he had mastered the instrument within a year. In due time, he picked up the organ learning to play by ear.

Hector also has a natural talent for dancing and was runner-up in the Little Michael Jackson Search organised by Pepsi and Cold Storage in 1993. Their big break came when they performed at the Standard Chartered Bank – Star Games Dinner and Dance held in Federal Hotel two years ago. From then on, they started performing together as the Zarsadias Brothers and performed at weddings and company dinners.

Their past performances include The Tudor Bar, The X’mas Choir Presentation, Standard Chartered – Star Games Dinner and Dance, The Starlite Lounge, New Year’s Eve Dinner and Dance, Country & Western Music Charity Fest, and many more.

Sculpturing Silence is based on the philosophy that music like art and sculpture is aconstant creation of the changing mind, moods and expression of individuals. However, unlike art, sculpture and solo musical performances, which are often highly individualistic, group based music creation depends on the blending of individual characters and the interdependent drive and passion of dynamic rhythm and harmony.

Like a sculpture and a painting that gives form to the creative mind, music provides the soul and form to silence. For music, one needs to sculpture silence.

Sculpturing Silence is a 4 piece group of musicians playing straight blues, blues based rock and occasionally jazz rock. The group comprises:

  1. Rodin on Electric Bass/Vocals
  2. Deepak on Lead Guitar/Vocals
  3. Freddy on Alto sax
  4. VJ on Drums

Probably the only blues/rock group with an Alto sax, they have been playing together and with others for the past 15 years both locally and overseas “off & on” depending on their phase in life! They cover blues, blues-based rock and occasionally jazz rock & some psychedelic stuff.

Based on the styles and elements of 60s and 70s giants of blues based rock improvisers such as Cream, early Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Iron Butterfly etc, the music played by Sculpturing Silence is a dynamic musical expression - total creativity and improvisation yet retaining the subtle elements of originality of composers. Perhaps as a hint of respect to the pioneers.

Catch Sculpturing Silence at Backyard on Tuesday, May 22nd, 2006. The band will be playing covers of Hendrix, T-Bone Walker, Sonny Boy Williamson, B.B. King , Led Zeppelin, Cream, Pink Floyd, Robben Ford, Iron Butterfly, Billy Cobham, Herbie Hancock, Tommy Bolin, and many others.

SINGER-SONGWRITER SHELLEY LEONG with her latest album, released nationwide, has been making waves in the original music scene.

She has already established herself as an active performer in the live music scene in Malaysia ever since her return from Australia, either as a soloist, duo (with Az Samad) or with her band.

Her songs and her soothing, unique voice are a tasteful fusion of contemporary styles of folk, pop/rock coupled with hints of jazz and ethnic, with strong melodic lines and thoughtful lyrics.

She also plays piano and guitar. She has performed in front of thousands at the Mont Kiara Jazz fest, Times Square Merdeka Celebrations and at the same time, performed to cosier settings such as the ever-popular Songwriters' Rounds at No Black Tie and Alexis.

Throughout her sets, no matter what the setting, she is able to create an engaging and intimate performance experience for the audience with her personal way of presenting her songs.

Shelley was recently awarded for her popular single "Resident Fool" that recently charted number two on musiccanteen.com "Top Monthly Downloads."

Acoustic, heart-warming, organic and honest - Shelley's debut album - 'Storyteller' is the latest original album to stand out from Malaysia's independent music scene.

BACKGROUND - THE STORY SO FAR...
Shelley has an unconventional past for someone involved in music full time now, which is perhaps something that makes her stay down to earth and appreciative of her current vocation.

She studied commerce in Australia, graduated with first class honours and then went on to be an associate lecturer in the University of Sydney and lastly, worked in the corporate world in PricewaterhouseCoopers, Sydney, as an accountant.

She took off on a four-month backpacking trip round Europe, has bungy jumped, scuba dived with sharks, cliff-jumped, rock-climbed, and now, she's out with an album.

She returned to Malaysia two years ago to pursue music full time as a student at ICOM and started performing her original compositions wherever she could.

Within a few months of her return, she was awarded the JVC Sales & Service Malaysia Award last year for her song-writing capabilities and expressive singing at the MTV/JVC 'Sing-out-loud' competition.

She went on to perform at Kuala Lumpur's major music venues including Actors Studio, No Black Tie, La Bodega, Alexis, Emporium, Planet Hollywood, BSC, the Kit Kat Club and many more.

Along the way, she has gathered a solid supporting band with the right chemistry, made up of many dynamic and young upcoming sessionist such as Alda Tan (Dragon Red), Az A. Samad, Zalila & Jerral and many other contributers who enjoy playing her music.

In 2003, she released a self-produced demo/EP called Anacrusis, which sold out during her performances.

Within 2 years, she has risen to become a recognisable name in the original independent music scene.

The combination of talent with hard work, resourcefulness, taking and finding opportunities, passion and professional manner has earnt her the respect of her peers.

Amongst her achievements was the best selling Music Circus series show at Actors Studio, Dataran Merdeka, "The Storyteller, Shelley Leong and Friends". It was touted as one of the most interesting acoustic productions at the time. It was also a rare feat for a newcomer to host a full show.

Shelley was recently awarded for her popular single "Resident Fool" that recently charted number 2 on musiccanteen.com's "Top Monthly Downloads." She has made numerous TV appearances including Channel V, NTV7, 8TV and TV3, performing her original songs.

In 2003, she was introduced to producer/audio engineer Nick Lee of Sonique Productions, who had just returned from Los Angeles. Nick, a fast upcoming sort-after producer and audio engineer was keen to record her album and the partnership to produce the album was formed. Preproduction work started in January 2004.

EXCERPTS & REVIEWS
"Her intimate debut album, Storyteller, is certainly a worthy addition to the local singer-songwriter catalogue. Self-released through Leong's own Soundtrax Productions imprint and produced by Nick Lee, the 13-track album contains radio-friendly folk and pop-rock tunes sprinkled with lazy Sunday jazz touches" -The Star newspaper, album review.

"In her debut album, 'Storyteller', Shelley weaves a soothing tale of hope and dreams in our journey through life. Her pleasing, airy voice plus the catchy melodies and use of an eclectic mix of instruments combine to provide hours of easy listening pleasure with several tracks to get you moving. More discerning listeners may feel that the lyrics lack depth and mystique, but Shelley uses simple words and a certain amount of catchphrases effectively to deliver her message of seeing the better side of reality and appreciating the finer moments in life.

This album also brings together several guest performers, adding a nice touch especially to the later parts of the album with some unexpected sounds. Listen out for the Chinese flute in Crime and a mix of saxophone and double bass in 'Merry Christmas To You'. It's also interesting to note that Shelley's hit single, 'Resident Fool' was recently the second most downloaded single at Music Canteen (www.musiccanteen.com).

With the exception of 1 or 2 more solemn tracks, Storyteller will perk you up and brighten your mood during the drive to work on that dreaded Monday morning. So, don't be surprised if you actually find yourself smiling at the driver who cuts u off or the boss who steps in an hour late.

To buy or not to buy? This is definitely a commendable effort and we look forward to enjoying more of Shelley's future work. Consider adding this album to your collection and support a fine local talent in the making." -album review by www.loudmusik.com

"She's a fusion of Nora Jones / Alanis Morissette, with some cool acoustics thrown in. Her tunes are warm and engaging, her voice haunting and her lyrics real, depicting the norms of human life. A very immaculate first album, and we should be hearing more of Shelley in the future." - Review by MYC News

"There is something that remains authentic about the simplicity of acoustic singer/songwriters. No exception is made for Malaysian singer/songwriter Shelley Leong's album Storyteller, a mellow collection of acoustic songs that land somewhere between Natalie Merchant and Norah Jones...

Most of the songs are rooted in the comfortable feeling of Leong's gentle piano. Her voice at times reminds me of a harsher version of a 70s Joni Mitchell, and the jazziness of numbers like "Crime" are similar to Mitchell's Court and Spark era. Most of the album's songs are relaxed wine-sipping music, while other songs, like the album's best, "Innocent Girl," are driven and pop-ish.

Storyteller is slow--but a good slow (not drawn out). Leong's feelings are felt through her passionate songs, complete with stories about breakups, make-ups, and memories." - US Review by Jeremy Stanifer www.eomentertainment.com

"... she has successfully built a solid following. I've heard snippets of one song (from the album) and have come away impressed. Here is a another fine example of a musician who's benefited from working the local live scene conscientiously and intelligently." - Pete Teo

"Shelley really stunt everyone in the house with her vocability." "..patrons in the house really enjoyed her top vocals and her tremendous hypnotic style of music." - Andy Fam, organizer of the Sunday Freestyle Jam @ Emporium

"Good thing for Leong, her odes to romance never get drowned in sappiness and she's got plenty of song writing muscle to make all the tunes work. It's not all just love songs though; she also touches on other subjects close to her heart. There's a bit of Vonda Sheppard, Joan Osborn and Paule Cole in what Leong does that will keep fans of the genre interested." - Adlin Rosli KLUE magazine

Eventually in 1993, he followed his fellow musician's footsteps and left his hometown Taiping, Perak, for KL.

A COLLABORATION between Julian Mokhtar and Aznan Aziz, The Corn Cake Kings is an acoustic/electric folk/rock/blues outfit which started off with the occasional gig at Titus Blues Avenue in Petaling Street early in 2004.

They perform their own arrangements, adaptations and interpretations of standards and lesser-known songs, mostly come up with on the spur of the moment.

They've been known to do things like a bluegrass vesion of "Stairway To Heaven" just for fun, or a country version of "Obladi Oblada", complete with yodelling.

That doesn't mean that they compromise on musicianship. Aznan is an accomplished Harmonica player and guitarist, his talents honed by his experience as a busker. Julian of course is no slouch himself when it comes to guitar playing.

The two complement vocally as well, adding harmonies to each other's leads. The Corn Cake Kings are sometimes augmented by pecussionist/vocalist John Hagerdorn, who adds another dimension to their music, chipping in with a third vocal harmony as well.

PROFILE:
Pete Teo is perhaps Malaysia’s finest gift to the English musical world. In the years since he first won critical praise for his work in the duo Mid Century, he has spent time as a session musician, film scorer, and much-talked about solo artist.

His live shows in Malaysia and Japan have earned him a rabid cult following, and much critical praise.

In 2003, he garnered rave reviews for the release of “Rustic Living For Urbanites,” a classy collection of intelligent, evocative songs that explores themes both universal and obscure.

Now, in 2004, music lovers in the rest of the world can finally hear the sensitive songwriter-storyteller’s music for themselves.

Teo’s natural talents provide him the ability to provide the many important ingredients needed in a solid album: sweet melody, delicate singing, imaginative song structure, and evocative lyrics.

These elements, combined with a warm, live sound, help make “Rustic Living For Urbanites” a truly enjoyable listening experience.

Above all else, Teo excels in crafting tales, drawing the listener into a world crafted out of words and melodies that feel more like an aural movie than just a musical piece.

The music is uncluttered, having space to dance around the air and waft towards the listener - thanks in large part to having been recorded on vintage analogue equipment.

The digital manipulation so often employed in today’s music is nowhere to be found here.

Armed with six year’s worth of quality songs (all loosely tied around the recurring themes of love, loss, living, and letting go), Teo gathered a formidable group of musicians, and the resulting work is a very mature, sophisticated album.

Many of the musicians and engineers donated their services because they believed in this project, and the result is telling.

Listeners will appreciate the album’s charms from the opening moments of “Arms of Marianne,” with its brisk guitar figures, droning harmonium backing, and Teo’s almost scat-style approach to singing.

The simple love-story plot is elevated by Teo’s poetic lyrics, with elegant lines like “We’ll be afraid, and even hesitate / But we’ll talk all night and sleep all day / And then we’ll kiss and touch like lovers, won’t we Marianne?”

Teo’s way with words, indeed, is one of the strongest appeals of “Rustic Living For Urbanites”.

Printed in the liner notes, the lyrics stand by themselves as little conversational vignettes - and when set to Teo’s delicate music, the words are given a potent backdrop.

A fine example is on “Alive N’ Free,” where the gentle sounds of a mournful acoustic guitar slowly envelope Teo as he sings “Some days, I don’t remember what it’s like to be alive and free.”

And then there is the plaintive “Marianne Called”, which features the erhu, sparingly used electric piano, and Teo’s warm, soulful voice singing about all that might have been, and wondering whether paths not chosen would have been worthwhile: “Sometimes I wished I had caught that train and set free the cage around my heart”…

This is an intense body of work – and executed with sure-footedness more often found in the best works of old masters.

It not only explains why the album was nominated for so many awards in Malaysia, but also why Teo is one of the most exciting artists in the world today.

REVIEWS
“Pete Teo could prove to be the Chinese world's most important crossover artist. He paints his stories with the brushstrokes of a master - his colours are dynamic yet washed out, revealing melancholia.” Bruce Stringer, Music Street Journal (USA)

“Rustic Living For Urbanites is a remarkably quiet debut album. But it unearths a shout of brilliance that should be heard by everyone who appreciates music.” Michael D’Oliveiro, The Star (Malaysia) “Being bummed out doesn’t sound any better than this.” Adlin Rosli, KLue Magazine (Malaysia)

“Superb musicianship, a voice Chris Rea would kill for, and enviable production. An album to be listened to in its entirety - don't even try to judge it on single tracks.” David Kilpatrick, CD Baby (USA)

“Every once in a while an artist comes in from the fringes to shake things up and challenge the preconceptions we have all become comfortable with… which is why artists like Pete Teo are important.” Matt Daniels, Kakiseni (Malaysia)

“Mellow, mature and with more than a hint of studied cool to his repertoire, Pete Teo is making ambitious music that requires his audiences to use their brains.” Zack Yusof, The Star (Malaysia)

“Pete Teo is an artist-poet-musician in the truest sense of the word. His songs are poetry in motion. If you have lost your head lately and need to get back to reality with both feet on the ground, Rustic Living For Urbanites offers wonderful music with sobering thoughts to help you get there.” Keith Hannalect, Muzik review (USA)

“There is nothing about Teo's disc that I can fault. It's a gem from start to finish.” Bill Ribas, NY Rock (USA)

“Pete Teo, Malaysian native, might very well be a pop music genius. His worldview helps to create an otherworldly aura, as he comes at us from an angle that we’re not accustomed to. There’s a vague sense of mystery shrouding him, building a pleasant curiosity. This is intriguing work; it feels like Zen pop, hinting at life’s answers but offering only questions.” Fred Kraus, Minor 7th (USA)

“Simultaneously manic depressive, brooding, bittersweet and epic to the point of being cinematic, Rustic Living For Urbanites is pure exhilaration.” Dave Avran, The Musician (Malaysia)

“Rustic Living For Urbanites is musically polished yet emotionally raw. It delights and saddens in equal measure, and above all, leaves the listener in no doubt that Pete Teo is a force to be reckoned with.” Simon Burgess, In Bangsar (Malaysia)

“Perhaps its his tender songwriting that puts words to lovemaking or maybe it’s the fondness with which he strums the guitar, but the outcome of Rustic living For Urbanites is ground shatteringly good pop songs. It is guaranteed to sand down the rough divide between the cult fanatics that are already attached to every wisp that Pete Teo is involved in and the new fan that has only recently caught on.” J-Sin, Smother.Net (USA)

Peter Dickson is an Australian-based accomplished flamenco and jazz acoustic guitarist with ten albums to his credit.

Born in Bangalore, India, of English parents, Dickson started his professional music career at the age of thirteen and has since travelled and performed in Europe, India, Japan and Australia.

Dickson has been described as "Australia's fastest guitarist" with impeccable technique and emotion, executing complex lines with artistic integrity and precision, and surprising every now and then with percussive drumming on the guitar body.

This gifted musician first delved into the Spanish style after he chanced upon a recording of maestro flamenco guitarist Paco De Lucia in London at the ripe age of 21.

Inspired by the music, Dickson honed his skills at the acoustic guitar for up to five hours a day, while also working by day as a chef, carpenter and plumber, among various other jobs in London.

He arrived in Australia in late 1986 to work as a chef in the Star Hotel in South Melbourne, but he also busked at the Bourke Street Mall with local Spanish guitarist, Juan Martinez, for a year.

That partnership led to the recording of his first album, "Just The Two Of Us", in 1987.

In the years since, Dickson has recorded nine other albums, infusing his style with everything from fusion jazz to carnatic South Indian music.

A second Dickson/Martinez album entitled "Flamenco Falsetas" was a hit record in Australia in 1996 and sold over 60,000 copies, firmly establishing the duo has guitar virtuosos.

The success of the album introduced Dickson to legendary Australian "finger stylist" Tommy Emmanuel, with whom he did three live appearances, and also supported on national tours.

In August 1999, Dickson launched a solo career with the release of his first self-produced solo album titled "EastWest". He played all the instruments on this recording, blending the Spanish guitar with Indian percussion. He went on to cut "Talking to God" with leading carnatic musicians in South India and completed the recording in Sydney featuring bassist Steve Hunter, formerly from the Chick Corea band.

In 2001, Dickson did a concert in India with an Indian fusion band featuring the sitar, tabla, ghatam, tanpura and percussions, which resulted in album "Live in India".

Back in Sydney, Dickson produced "Alone with You" in 2003, and began touring to promote the album in India, Japan and Singapore.

Dickson's compositions reflect the years of immersion in Latin, Spanish, Indian and French gypsy styles with noted jazz inflections.

Izzy began playing the guitar at the age of 12. She has since performed at Fete De La Musique 2004 with her band called Ziel and played solo in several open mic and songwriter gigs including those organized by Azmyl Yunor, Pete Teo and Shelley Leong.

She currently performs in a duo with guitarist Jeremy Lim called Plush Velvet. Their music is described as "jazzy and pop-ish".

Jamie Woon is 21-years-old and hails from SW London.

He has received consistently excellent responses from audiences on the acoustic and cabaret circuits of London. Of Scottish/Malaysian-Chinese extraction, Jamie is in Malaysia to promote his five-track EP, "How Long" and touch base with a part of his heritage.

Jamie is the 4th generation of a line of professional musicians, which includes Hugh and Ted McKenna from the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. His mother, Mae McKenna, is a folk/celtic artist and session singer.

Jamie's music has been described by The Electro Acoustic Club as "Soul-Soaked Alt. Rock", a description he says he is very comfortable with.

Jamie draws inspiration from the music of Mae McKenna, Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, The Police and Sting, John Martyn, Peter Gabriel, Muse, Jeff Buckley, Kelly Joe Phelps, Don Ross, Foo Fighters and Michael Jackson.

Jamie's approach to the acoustic guitar is very individualistic and percussive, whilst his voice is strong, smooth and soulful. His alternative rock/soul sensibilities shines through in his dynamic, funky and emotional stage performances.

"Recently I have also been doing some songs with a loop sampler which enables me to record my voice live on stage and then add more things on top to create the backing track live in front of the audience with a bit of beat-boxing too. This has been going down really well with audience as there are very few people doing this kind of thing at the moment," said Jamie.

A regular performer at The Bedford in Balham, promoter Tony Moore and founder of the Kashmir Klub had this to say about the artiste: "Jamie combines rhythm, melody and a unique singing style to create a mesmeric melange of beautiful and compulsive music. He is an original, someone that I believe will make his mark in a world so used to copyists and pretenders."

Jamie is here to make new fans and learn about the Malaysian music scene. He performs at Backyard on Friday, April 29th at about 9pm, and will alternate sets with current Friday band S.W.V. For further information on Jamie Woon, contact Michelle at 017-3388610/016-3639689 or write to impac@asia.com

This trio is an incredibly versatile band that came together in the Backyard Pub and have since garnered a loyal following.

They comprise: Jason Noah, as lead singer and acoustic guitarist, Colin Jansen on electric guitar and Amizan Ariffin on keyboards. All three can hold their own as soloists but together they really rock the place on Fridays.

From the camaraderie on stage and the rousing ovations they get you know Jericho knows how to have fun and transmit that energy to its audience. "Many of the popular songs we play were actually requests from the Backyard crowd and have now become standards for the band," said Jason.

Some of the crowd-favourites include Eddy Grant's Gimme Hope Joanna, Bee Gees' Staying Alive, EWF's September, Bon Jovi's It's My Life and Bed of Roses, and Guns N' Roses' Sweet Child O' Mine. Colin and Amizan also rip the place up with their keyboard and guitar combo and their version of Paul Simon's You Can Call Me Al.

Talking about Jerry Felix is like talking about Malaysian rock music.

Before he came to public attention in a controversial group of schoolboys called The Falcons, the Malaysian music scene had no one it could refer to as a rock drummer.

Jerry came from a musical family. His mother Marjorie played guitar, while his father Patrick was a multi-instrumentalist who favoured the guitar, violin, trumpet and Hawaiian guitar and also made a name repairing and crafting guitars and violins.

Dad Patrick also performed in a famous Malayan family group called The Hawaiian Rhythmics with brothers Victor, Michael and Joseph on Hawaiian guitar, bass and drums, respectively, and velvet-voiced Gerald Samuel on guitar.

Wanting the boy to follow in his footsteps, Patrick began teaching him guitar when he was nine, but the pots and pans in the Felix kitchen soon bore evidence that he was only interested in becoming a drummer.

Patrick surrendered his dream and, as Jerry remembers it, fashioned him a pair of drumsticks from the branches of a hisbiscus plant which, as an apparent herald of things to come, was the national flower of Malaysia.

MUSIC DEBUT
It was about that time when cousin Brian was making the presence of a second-generation of family musicians felt, ably assisted by Jerry Ventura and Frankie Samuel.

All aged 11, they were schoolmates at La Salle, Peel Road in Kuala Lumpur. Jerry's first attempt at playing on a "real drum kit" was at the audition of this band of musicians which would soon became known as The Little Falcons.

"I was horrified at the debut," Jerry recalled during a recording session for his current solo album. His horror quickly turned to relief when he later heard his Uncle Victor tell his wife, Ruth: "Give that boy a few months and he'll be better than his Uncle Joe."

Music education at that time came from the family and Jerry remembers that the same people who sung the praise of his talents would also render no quarter when it came to perfecting his craft.

Some of the punishment would have put paid to anyone else's enthusiasm and determination, but not in this case. "I suffered through it all because I loved the drums! There would be no other career for me."

THE FALCONS
The sacrifice soon paid off. The Falcons made their first public appearances at events in which the Hawaiian Rhythmics starred, playing whatever they could when the senior Felixes took a break.

Even on these cherished occasions they had to be careful because they knew their elders were paying close attention to the fledgling flagbearers, and any adverse comments from the audience would result in sound admonishing.

It was a sound education because The Falcons soon became the envy of their peers in school and other youngsters in the budding music industry, and beyond their wildest dreams, eventually became the highest-paid, most sought-after band of its time.

The 60s saw the quartet cut its teeth in Malaysian waters and were the first local band to star on television when it was introduced in 1964, cutting their first records with CBS/Life, thus becoming the first Malaysian act to sign a record deal with a major record label.

The Falcons also recorded with EMI and other local private labels.

Their records made quite an impression in the country and two songs – Nightmare and Baby Barefoot Walk (both originals) – stormed the Music City Hit Parade in 1965, taking the top two positions, with Baby Barefoot Walk getting valuable mentions in foreign music magazines.

Baby Barefoot Walk, incidentally, beat hits by international stars like Elvis Presley (You'll Be Gone and Do The Clam), Cliff Richard (The Minute You're Gone), Herman's Hermits (Wonderful World) and The Beatles (Ticket To Ride)!

FALCONS IN FLIGHT
It was just the break The Falcons needed and in 1969 they headed (like Bob Hope, they proudly claim) to Vietnam to entertain American GIs based there.

"It was crazy and frightening, sometimes playing music to ecstatic crowds of soldiers and Vietnamese, then huddling together in underground bunkers with bombs exploding above," Jerry grimaces at the memory.

Those were difficult years; it wasn't easy keeping the group alive and there were times they considered breaking up, especially because of the financial requirements.

When they returned, ardent music lover Yap Cheng Hock came to their rescue and changed everything, providing them with a bungalow (later called the House) to practise in, a car, salaries when they were out of work and even the privilege of decision-making, only offering valuable advice when it was sought.

The "House" was the Falcons practise studio by day and Rock Club by night.

At this time, Jerry was the only local drummer who was playing double bass drums at the behest of the late Terry Thaddeus. Brian Felix and Terry Thaddeus were two of the most talked about guitarists in the local music scene. Brian later opted to find his fortune in Australia.

In the late 60s and 70s, the Falcons in their various line-ups (original: Brian, Jerry, Ventura, Frankie and later Ronnie Felix) played at the best nightspots in Malaysia and Singapore, including the Tin Mine, Tomorrow Disco, Shindig, Pink Pussycat and Tropicana. Some of the musicians that also performed as a Falcon were Gren, Shah, Charles Fong and Aziz.

It was at the Gypsy Caravan in Penang where famous pop orchestra leader James Last saw them perform and suggested they consider furthering their career in Germany.

EUROPE CALLING
In 1978, the Falcons flew to Europe and for the next 10 years made quite a name for themselves. The line-up at this time boasted the talents of Desmond Gomis on keyboards and Andy Peterson on bass, Frankie on guitar, with Jerry Ventura having developed his skills to include horns, woodwind and percussion to the band's rhythm section.

Jerry, by now, was known to everyone as The Animal for his hard-hitting style. The Malaysian band took Europe by storm and soon, the doyens of the continent, playing gigs in the most popular nighclubs.

They were sought after to open for top international artistes like the Chirelles, Chi-Lites, Johnny Tillotson and the Manhattans.

Falcons were also the backing band for The Coasters, The Platters, Sister Sledge and Percy Sledge.

GOING IT ALONE
But bad paymasters got into the picture and because of this Jerry left the band after two years in Europe, choosing to freelance and do sessions with other European outfits, playing rock, reggae and commercial pop hits.

Among the notable bands that Jerry played with during his "solo" years was Rockane and Kris. (An original number from this period "Look, Don't Touch" is featured on Jerry Felix's solo album "Jerry Felix…at last".)

After a hectic 10 years in Europe, Jerry returned and reunited with Jerry Ventura to form The Falcons again and perform at Petaling Jaya's hotspot, Piccadilly, before leaving to form the seminal Made In Malaysia, a truly outstanding R & B outfit that featured Paul, Allen, Sunny and Daniel.

Next came the powerhouse, S.T.O.R.M ( Slight Touch Of Rock Music), a name conjured by Andy Peterson. This hard rocking group featured Andy, Richard, Din "Cikgu", Desi and the unforgettable Connie. S.T.O.R.M brought the house down during their stint at the Hard Rock Café at Bangkok.
More recently he was the leader of Chilli Padi and now currently leads his own band.

Jerry was the lead drummer for the Benson & Hedges Light Tones series of shows and albums that included many local talents (Man Kidal, Jay Jay, Wah Idris) and international stars like Rex Goh (Air Supply), Laurie Wisefield (Wishbone Ash), Chuck Sabo (Elton John) and Victor Rounds (Paul McCartney).

As an endorsee for Yamaha Drums and Sabian Cymbals, he had done drum clinics with Akiro Jimbo and Lewis Pragasam. Jerry plays the Yamaha Recording Custom and Stage Custom series.

AT PRESENT…
The mid-nineties found Jerry and Andy Peterson holding down the resident rhythm section at the X Place. Among the musos that slugged it out with them were Amir Yussof, Julian Mokhtar, Azman Warren, Steve Thornton, Prema Lucas, Jose Thomas and Aubrey Suwito.

He is also a regular guest star on the albums and concerts of several Malaysian artistes, including Ziana Zain, Seha, Shima, Aishah, Amy Mastura, Bala and the Blitz, Leonard Tan, Salamiah Hassan and Search lead vocalist Amy.

With such an awesome amount of experience, it is no wonder that Jerry Felix has made his entry in the Malaysian Book of Records as the Longest Playing Drummer in the Malaysian music industry.

Jerry Felix will be jamming at the finale of the Jairus Anthony Music Festival 2004 on November 17th, 2004 at the Backyard Pub.

Alfred Ho is the consummate entertainer with over three decades of performing experience at numerous stageshows, private functions and nightspots across the country.

He has endeared himself to audiences for his interpretations of evergreen numbers from legendary crooners Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck, and various country and western performers.

Alfred's mellow but powerful voice is irresistible to those who long for the days when songs had words you could actually hear and appreciate -- a time when melodies were not obscured and drowned by crashing guitars, pounding beatboxes and techno rhythms.

This Perak-born performer continues to surprise audiences wherever he goes with everything from soothing ballads to rock and roll and even throws in some Spanish, Malay, Cantonese, Japanese and Hokkien numbers to prove his diversity.

Listening to the talented Alfred is a walk down memory lane, reviving gems from past that you may not have even heard on the radio of late. Alfred has such a wide repertoire that he has been known to play for four straight hours, with still some songs to spare.

HISTORY
Struck blind after a bout of measles at the age of three, Alfred showed a love for music from an early age.

At Penang's St Nicholas School for the Blind, he taught himself to play the guitar and formed a four-piece schoolboy band called The Sharks.

He later honed his craft doing the pub circuit as a solo guitarist and developed an uncanny sense of being able to 'read' his audience from the stage.

His first brush with fame came as a semi-finalist in RTM's Bakat TV, the popular talent show of the 70s.

Alfred also did a few shows called Take Five with a commercial broadcasting station in that period and even cut two EP vinyl records of his own compositions. Two songs, Train To Tennessee and Wendy's Love Song were particularly popular and he recorded several cassettes back then that were played on local airwaves.

In 1984, having garnered a following and dubbed Malaysia's Jose Feliciano, Alfred finally quit his steady job as a telephone operator and went into music fulltime.

A decade of performances later, during which no record label was willing to sign him on, Alfred self-produced an album of 22 covers of his favourite hits called "Special Gems".

Today, his loyal fanbase, from ambassadors to royalty, from vinyl connoisseurs to lovers of classic dancing, still speak of Alfred with fondness and continue to enjoy his special brand of music.

Come and experience a night of golden oldies with this Malaysian legend for one night only at the Backyard Pub & Grill on Thursday, Nov 03, 9pm

TEN THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT ALVIN FLETCHER

On stage, Alvin Fletcher has a look that is an anomaly. He wears a woolen hat, pulled down to his eyebrows, tight shirts that emphasize his physique, and has a rough-cut, don't-mess-with-me-dude stare.

But if you look closer, when he peers down those glasses and the computer notebook (in place of a songbook), you may mistake him for a bit of a nerd.

Off-stage, a shy, but sly, smile emerges and his demeanour is relaxed and convivial.

"I have a great passion for music. And I take it very seriously," he says of his stage demeanour. Alvin, after all, has seen it and done it all.

From lowly gigs at the seediest holes-in-the-wall to the classiest hotels in the city.

Here are ten things you might not know about this true musician:

1. Alvin is a multi-instrumentalist and can play the lead guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, saxophone, harmonica and the fiddle.

2. He is self-taught and picked up instruments while with the school band back in St Francis Institution in Malacca. By age 12, he was performing in children's radio shows on RTM.

3. Alvin is an accomplished arranger and recently did "Malaysiaku Merdeka" which played on the radio and also teaches the audio programme Cakewalk and MIDI programming

4. He used to play with the Wheelers, a well-known country and western band that grew from a three-piece in Malacca in the early 80s to an 8-piece band at its heights in the early 90s.

They played in almost every state in the country and one very popular country haunt in Damansara Utama that went by the name Gold Canyon.

5. Alvin weighed 127 kgs at one point. This was a throwback from his weightlifting days in school when he kept the weight on to stay competitive in his weight category. In the last five years, he has lost so much weight that he says "a cousin once walked right passed me on the street without recognizing me."

6. He took a five-year break from music after the Wheelers broke up in 1992 and completely changed his career to a 9-to-5 job.

7. In 1997, the music world came calling again and he began moonlighting, doing gigs as a drummer with a rock band and a bassist with a fusion band. "The passion for music drove me to start playing again. I believe music is like any other skill - if you don't keep doing it, you will lose it."

8. In 2001, he was back in the KL music scene with several bands that did the hotel circuit in Park Royal, Concorde, Melia and Impiana.

9. By 2004, Alvin formed The President's Men with Suresh and Clinton. They play at various pubs in KL and PJ and are still going strong.

10. Despite his country, rock and reggae leanings on stage, Alvin enjoys listening to fusion and commercial jazz. He has high regards for bassist John Patitucci and the jazz quartet Fourplay, which comprised Lee Ritenour on guitar, Nathan East on bass, Bob James on keys and Harvey Mason on drums.

Alvin Fletcher plays a regular gig on Wednesdays at the Backyard with Raymond Chia.

Springing forth from its roots in Prana (Life Breath), and Inner Space (That which is Within) grows the new AkashA, - an exciting new band comprising seasoned musicians both steeped in the traditional and contemporary, Western and Eastern, Old and New. From the root word 'kash' which means that which illuminates or radiates, Akasha also means bountiful space. Perhaps that is why musicians Kumar Karthigesu of Inner Space combine with Sivabalan Shanmuga Sundram, Jamie Wilson and Greg Henderson of Prana, exploring new frontiers of music. With the connection and seamless bonding of Eastern and Western genre instrumentation, this group aims at connecting souls of all ethnicities and then, to push at the boundaries of tradition, creating illuminating music together with its audience. Together with them joins Vick Ramakrishnan, a Malaysian tabla artist based in Perth, Australia and Badar Fawzi, a multipercussionist/vocalist and Eric Li, the piano/keyboard extrodinaire. These seven artists pour their unique talent into the make up of the new AkashA.

Amizan, better known as Mizan, started his performing career in 1980 as a guitarist, in the nightclub circuits up north in Butterworth and Penang. Born in Kuala Lumpur but raised in Kedah, it was already considered an achievement for one to be part of the night music scene at the tender age of 16.

After completing his Sixth Form, Mizan moved to Kuala Lumpur, but gave up performing live for about six years. Instead, he made a living in various industries - hotel management, advertising and computer sales.

As fate would have it, one day, he was introduced to the late, great Mike Bernie Chin and his Asia Entertainment Network, an agency hiring musicians and performers nationwide as club acts. By this time, Mizan had picked up piano & keyboard skills. He became a member of band named HOTLINE that was immediately offered a contract at 11LA Discotheque in Kuala Lumpur in 1991.

The gig lasted for 18 months but, unfortunately, soon after the contract expired, the band could only get gigs as a replacement act at places like Blues Café, Jimmy Dean's, Machine One and Network Bangsar. This eventually led to its breakup.

Mizan went back to working in the day at C K Music Sdn Bhd - a company that distributes musical instruments for the Malaysian market. He was, at the time, travelling around the country and teaching government schoolteachers how to play keyboards.

After being promoted to the manager position, he again quit the performing industry for another two years until he was invited to team up with a band named PRIMADONNA who was already performing at Subang Merlin in 1994. The band lasted for about two years with regular contracts at hotels and dance clubs around Kuala Lumpur. The highlight for Primadonna was when it tied up with Marlboro for a two-year nationwide tour of the country and performing for the Marlboro Adventure Team outward-bound parties.

Still working by day, Mizan ventured into the pub scene by night performing at the popular Man's café in TTDI and Online Pub in Damansara Kim.

FROM SAHARA TO AIR SUPPLY

In 1996, he was offered to be the first act to play at Bentley's Pub of Nikko Hotel, alongside the Malaysia's Tina Turner, Sahara Yaacob. The hotel scene, with its emphasis on jazz and broadway, at the time, was not his cup of tea, so after four months he formed ANIMO - a rock band featuring Jatt (Black Dog Bone), Samad (Lefthanded), Yazit (Search) and Aub (Barongan) for a short stint at Hard Rock Café KL. The band went on later to become ROCKAFELLA - a rock giant in the Kuala Lumpur club scene.

In 1997, Mizan returned to the hotel entertainment circuit by joining JUST FRIENDS, starting off with a contract at Monkey Bar of Legend Hotel. The band did well racking up contracts later at New World Hotel, ParkRoyal Hotel and Concorde Hotel.

That same year, Mizan had a chance to back AIR SUPPLY in an half-hour performance.

In 1998, Mizan formed his own six-piece band named 2520 to perform at the XVI Commonwealth Games, held in Kuala Lumpur. After the Commonwealth stint, he went on to form a successful three-piece act named TRINITY that played at Parkroyal, Impiana Hotel, Nikko Hotel, Corus Hotel and then Eastin Hotel PJ. Trinity was a fixture at the KL hotel/clubs music scene for four solid years.

Another highlight of his career was when he led a band that backed RONAN KEATING for the 'Life Is A Rollercoaster' album launch at Bintang Walk in 2000.

Mizan later re-focused on regular one-night performances around Kuala Lumpur, PJ and Subang area and cashed in on countless corporate dinner functions and wedding events, even doubling as emcee during some Chinese weddings!

Presently, Mizan holds his own as a vocalist and keyboard player for Backyard's regular Friday act, Jericho. He also plays at Waikiki PJ on Wednesdays while holding the fort at C K Music by day.

THIS DUO have been together for only ten months but are a crowd-pleaser with a wide selection of radio-friendly songs.

With Amizan on the Korg keyboard and Leonard on guitars they both take turns at vocals and combine well for classic songs from 70s to the 90s and occasionally surprise with a contemporary hit from Black-Eyed Peas or This Love from Maroon 5. You can expect songs from Bread, Police, CCR, Van Morrison, even Culture Club from their mixed repertoire.

"We like the Backyard because people are at ease and comfortable to play to and it's a very jovial atmosphere," said Amizan, who runs a shop selling musical instruments in the day-time, while Leonard is a sales manager at a leading hotel.

THAT FAMILIAR GRAVELLY voice is still there. And the seemingly effortless guitaring. Bala is living proof that a pub singer can defy all musical whims and trends and still continue to be in demand.

This Taiping-born, Kampar-bred musician has been in the business for over 25 years. Along the way he cut a three-song CD and peddled it in Asia and Europe, sold off his partnerships in places like Street Connection and Online, and returned to what he loves best - getting on stage and just performing.

Bala's pearly white teeth and rapid-fire speech suggests there is a bit more of showman personae now in him. On stage, he'll stop in mid-song to chide someone headed to the loo or break out in an African chant or string a medley of numbers sliding from one song to the another with sheer ease.

A four-year stint in Maldives seems to have done him good. He speaks of the islands with fondness -- the sea, the diving, the people, the seafood and endless catches of the day both on sea and land.

"The reception in the Maldives was just great. You get Europeans who have never seen a musician like me performing solo and making all these sounds. I played a lot of reggae, Caribbean and beach party kind of music," he said.

Bala believes he's in a new phase in his life - what he calls "the eclipse of his younger days."

He says he's more comfortable on stage now than he ever was and plays sets that he enjoys. "It's like a love affair, once you let her go it's over and you move on. Some people still ask for the old stuff -- of course Sorang-geh-ne," he says as he rolls his eyes skyward and sighs.

Bala says he tries to be more fluid on stage. "Every audience is like doing some cooking on stage. I have to add here and there for the right ingredients. And then - who knows - something happens," he said.

Bala still sticks to the basics, an Ibanez and a basic drum machine, and doesn't go for all the digital instrumentation these days. "You can have all the equipment in the world but what it comes down to is presentation. The mood and feelings you convey. The equipment is just tools to express yourself."

Bala says when he's away from the lights, he's just an ordinary guy. "The time you see me on stage is just me compressed in three hours. There are two sides of me. Just like there are two sides to most musicians. I think all musicians are schizophrenics anyway," he said. So what would a day in the Other Bala's life be like? "I read the classics like Emily Bronte. I enjoy science fiction: Asimov and Star Trek. I am also a Hallmark guy - I prefer watching human dramas."

It's the "human drama" and, of course, the music that's bringing Bala back to Backyard on every Thursday. So come on over and hear him rock and please, please no more requests for Sorang-geh-ne.

The Benchmarx are…

Eric 'Flea' Beck, bass, harmonica, high school economics teacher. Eric lays down the funky groove in the rhythm section, keeps the band sane and has been known to have really cool facial hair.

Bill 'Monster' Madden, guitar, high school chemistry teacher. Bill funks it up on his sweet six string. Ask him about any obscure music from the UK and he'll scream out some lyrics.

Steve 'The Buzz' Northcott, guitar, vocals, megaphone, middle school art teacher. Steve brings a little rap, soul and comedy to the group. He's been caught improvising lyrics to songs that might make some audience members blush.

Erik 'The Director' Richardson, drums, high school athletic director. Erik brings the long hair, rock attitude and versatility of being a singer, drummer and keyboard player. He can even organize a soccer tournament for you if need be!

Kenny 'Joy Donut' Peavy, vocals, guitar, megaphone, middle school science teacher. Kenny belts out some soulful vocals and political slogans while proving once again that white men can't dance.

The Benchmarx evolved from a few guys goofing around in a studio to the rock giants that they are today. They play an eclectic set of music from the 80's and 90's and tackle some songs that many bands are either too afraid or ashamed to attempt.

Since their debut in their principal's backyard they've taken the local music scene by storm!. If you like to party, dance, get a little crazy or have a good time then you won't want to miss their shows.

Colin was introduced into a musical career in the early 1980's when he emerged the winner in a talent-time contest in Ampang Park Complex singing 'Johnny Be Good'.

A nearly fatal motor-bike accident and with his leg plastered because of a broken hip-bone kept him at home for a few months and made him take up a guitar given by his parents, to pass the time away.

Finding a great affinity for the guitar he quickly learnt the various chords and played and sang songs. He had already been introduced to songs from the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's during singing sessions at parties in the family circles, when his father, a former musician, played the guitar and sang.

PROFILE: Denise Ann Freeman began singing at the age of five.

By the age of seven she was confidently singing a Charley Pride hit song with her father as he strummed his guitar.

Denise grew up in a musical family with her mother playing the organ and her sisters singing and playing the acoustic guitar.

Together they would entertain all and sundry, in a swanky four-part harmony.

Denise started writing poetry at the age of 13 and by the age of 14, she was playing the guitar and composing songs. (To date, she has written more than 200 poems of which she has turned into a self published book, called "A Lyrical Life".)

When Denise turned 16, she entered a singing competition under the youth category, for the Sri Sathya Sai World Peace Festival.

She won 1st prize for best rendition and best composition, which led her to win a trip to Perth, Australia.

She also appeared at the KL Plaza Extravaganza decked in a cowboy outfit, belting her songs to the public.

In 1987 Denise's father opened a Country & Western Pub called the Gold Canyon. Denise took this opportunity to sing a few numbers with a few local bands whenever she could.

In her late teens, Denise jammed with OD Levy, and the resident band, at the River Bank in Central Market and even formed a band of her own, at the local college she attended. She also jammed at a bar called Treffpunkt with Alex Peters.

At 20 years of age, Denise hit the stage again, singing to a large audience at the Strange Days Concert, organized by Peter & Markiza Hassan. Held at the British Council, the proceeds of the tickets, went to the Nature Society.

The following year, Denise's country and western jingle, "Go super Shell" hit national radio and TV and since then, Denise's voice has been used for many a product in the Malaysian advertising scene.

In 1993, at the age of 23, one of Denise's songs featured in Markiza's album, Open Secret. The song was called 'Up on a Hill', and was sung by Markiza.

Denise embarked on a professional career in writing for more than a decade, whilst continuing to sing and play the guitar on the side and jamming with musicians, whenever she could. In 1999, Denise traveled from Malaysia to Finland and then to Romania, whereupon she continued to write more songs.

NAKED & UNDONE, the album
In 2004, Denise decided that 17 years of song writing was too incredible to contain. The result - eight of her best songs recorded in Malaysia, backed by some of Malaysia's renowned artists like Julian Mokhtar, Jaime Wilson, Jimmie Loh and Bada.

Her musical ability and her versatility from song to song are undeniable throughout the album. Her melodies are memorable and very sing-along. In fact, most of her tracks are commercially catchy.

Her world of music glides from funky folk and blues to soul and country & western. Called, 'Naked and Undone', the album is really an open journal, in which Denise bears her soul for anyone wishing to listen, or read into her.

Her musical influences as she was growing up (besides Charley Pride & Johnny Cash) were Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald and Van Morrison. Her country and western influence prevails subtly in her music and she has the upbeat rhythms of Shania Twain and her lyrics are 'Edie Brickell sharing a tequila sunrise with Suzanne Vega'. She does all her own female backing vocals.

Yet, Denise is an individual in her own right.

"Putting this album together was an incredible journey for me," Denise says. "I worked with the multi-talented JD; the director genius of Studio 21:05 and star guitarist from the rising international band, Pop Shuvit.

"JD created a unique pulse behind each song, exploring different genres and instruments like harps, flutes, the udhu, djembe and a didgeridoo sounding instrument.

"What makes the album extra special is, I got to work with some exciting people in music and I had input from people I grew up with like Rafique Rashid, Peter and Markiza Hassan, Antares and Amir Yusoff.

The end result is an album that is culmination of my past and present; a reflection of whom I am - an open book, hence the title of the album."

So, Get 'Naked and Undone', with Denise.

Denise Freeman performs at Backyard Pub after 9pm, on Saturday, February 26th, 2005.

Double Take is a jazz duo comprising finger-stylist Roger Wang and torch singer Mia-Germain Palencia.

They came together in 2000, when Roger, an accomplished guitarist and owner of a Kota Kinabalu-based recording studio, was looking for 'the paint' to fill his canvas of melodies, and chose singer Mia, who was then only 16.

Mia's mature, breathy voice harks back to the days of Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole when the singer made the song, and not vice versa, in true jazz tradition.

Double Take's eponymous 12-track album released in November 2000 was a hot-seller at their shows and captured the spirit of the duo with six original numbers including two Malay numbers and one Tagalog song.

Mia and Roger have a beautiful chemistry on stage which has been described by one reviewer as a "marriage of heart and virtuosic technique".

Roger juggles chords, bass lines, melody and even percussive beats to complement Mia's rich, expressive and endearing voice on stage. Their ability to enhance each other's performance is what a successful musical partnership is all about.

ROGER WANG PROFILE

Roger Wang started playing the guitar at the tender age of eight. Coming from a musical family, his father and uncles became his early guitar teachers. This was followed by two years of classical guitar lessons in a local music school. Inspired by the sound and energy of rock 'n roll music and early guitar music by bands like The Beatles, The Shadows and The Ventures, Roger got his first electric guitar for his twelfth birthday.

Growing up in a time where other teenagers were more interested in forming dance groups than musical bands, Roger found himself hanging around musicians much older than him and playing music that were hits long before he was born. By the age of 17, he played his first paying gig in his uncle's band called "Good Company".

Roger's interest in music covered more than just playing the guitar. He was fascinated with composing, arranging, recording and producing music. He started writing music when he was 12, because he felt that sometimes it was "hard to find songs that could say exactly what he wanted to say". This lead to very basic production projects using simple tools and techniques. He read about "sound on sound" recording techniques where it was possible to create layers of sound using two cassette recorders. The result was raw, but it fed his passion to do more.

In order to be a complete musician and producer, it is important to understand everything that is involved in making music. With this in mind, Roger studied vocals and music arranging from various instructors, taught himself to play keyboard, bass and drums.

When it came time to choose a career, music was actually not his first choice. Music is always encouraged as a hobby, but is rarely presented as a career option. It was only while Roger was doing research, that he discovered that there are a lot more opportunities available in music than what is normally perceived. The idea of making a career out of something that he had so much passion and talent for inspired him to concentrate on music full-time.

He moved to Kuala Lumpur and enrolled in Ocean Institute of Audio Engineering and Guitar Institute of Malaysia (GIM). Two years later, he graduated and decided to go back home to Sabah to start his career in music. He worked in a well-established recording studio as the in-house audio engineer and music arranger. He also taught guitar and continued performing for various functions.

After a year, Roger felt he had enough confidence and experience to be on his own. He started RAM Production, a recording studio based in his house. He invested in some basic digital recording equipment. It was not much, but it was enough to start. Business was slow in the beginning, but slowly the number of clients and projects grew and so did the studio.

In November 1999, RAM was ready to move out of the house and is now located at the center of a commercial area. With a vision to cover all aspect of music, RAM has expanded its business to cover music and audio retail, education, rental and installation.

Despite all this, Roger has never lost his passion for the guitar. Inspired by guitar players like Tommy Emmanuel and Tuck Andress, Roger studied solo finger-style guitar. This unique style of playing unaccompanied guitar intrigued him and it also made practical sense since it was often hard to find other musicians to play music with. Developing this style was a challenging and lonely journey. His only reference were albums, books and videos.

In April 2000, Roger had the opportunity to meet and perform with his guitar hero, Tommy Emmanuel, in a concert that was held in Kota Kinabalu. The experience gave him enough confidence to bring his guitar playing to the next level.

Having produced a number of albums for other people, Roger felt that it was time for him to make his own musical statement. Together with Mia, work on the Double Take album started in June 2000.

Mia's recent interests have focused on singer/musician/songwriters, a combination of skills not very commonly found, yet fast becoming a trend in the recent music scene. This latest discovery has lead her to explore her own creativity in writing songs and lyrics. Her music is centred around the guitar, working with folkish tunes and bossa nova moods.

Her lyrics are always story-based, relating her personal experiences with the people and places around her. She show-cased her songs in August 2002, at a show called the 'Music Circus KL'. The show, which is held every two months, is a local attempt made by producer Hardesh Singh and The Actor's Studio, Dataran Merdeka to give local songwriters a boost in the public eye.

Introducing……… THE ELVIS TRIO…… not one, not two but THREE Elvises!

The legendary Elvis Presley is alive with THE ELVIS TRIO, made up of three loyal fans to bring back fond memories of the King. See and relive the performance of the greatest name in rock and roll as Frankie Fong, Aziz Daud and Alex Wong present songs spanning the 50's, 60's and 70' of the Presley legacy. Together, these talented impersonators have the amazing ability to entertain you with a wide range of Elvis tunes in their original keys, covering the early years through to the final years of the *legendary *icon.

Frankie Fong has the incredible vocal range to deliver even the most difficult tunes from the fifties and sixties and can deliver more than 100 songs comfortably. Son of an accomplished singer, his late dad coached him at an early age, while other kids were still playing marbles! He has performed solo at several functions for more than a decade and never get tired of it. He plays the guitar and also performs with live bands.

Alex Wong, born on 25 December 1975, is a worship leader from Renewal Lutheran Church. He proudly presents popular number one hit songs and has also been doing several solo performances as early as 1995. He has won several Elvis Presley talent contests and one of the more prominent prizes was a trip to Racelands organized by Light & Easy Radio 105.7 FM. He delivers favorite tunes with passionate affection and maturity and is arguably the best young Elvis performer anywhere today.

Aziz Daud, the eldest, was born on January 05, 1955 and prefers to belt out seldom heard songs from the seventies, including the Concert years. Complete with rhinestone studded jumpsuit and swiveling gyrations, this performer also has been doing numerous party and private functions since the late eighties. He was also the first runner up of Discovery Channel's Be Elvis and Win contest held in 2002, and has been actively doing tributes to the enjoyment of many. As a self taught pianist, he sometimes obliges and play a few tunes too!

Today, these three talented tribute artists have grouped together as the ELVIS TRIO to entertain you with only songs that have been sung by Elvis Presley and be awed by their near exact repertoire and extensive range of songs from the first That's All Right Mama to the final Moody Blue hits.

Farid Ali is no doubt one of the region's finest jazz guitarists. For the past 15 years, he has performed and recorded with many well-known names including Ernie Watts, Eric Marienthal, Bobby McFerrin, Steve Thornton, Jeremy Monteiro, Lee Jeung Sik and Randy Branson.

In the last few years, this Berklee College of Music graduate, has taken to performing with the gambus, or Malay lute, developing a new sound he calls "jazz gambus".

As part of all-star jazz group, Asian Spirits, comprising musicians from Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and China, Farid has brought the gambus onto the world stage performing at the Jarasum Jazz Festival in Seoul, Korea and the Pori International Jazz Festival in Finland.

Farid first took to the guitar at the age of 11, and counts among his early influences such greats as George Benson, Jose Feliciano, Chet Atkins, Earl Klugh, Toninho Horta, Joe Pass and Pat Metheny.

At the age of 19, spurning his parents' wishes to take up law, Farid attended music training at the Guitar Institute of Technology, California, and went on to study commercial arranging and composition at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music.

Farid honed his skills performing for nine years in Boston and at various jazz festivals around the US. A highlight of his early career was winning the best arranger award at the Curacao International Song Festival in 1988, which spurred invites from various international music events in US and Europe.

To date, Farid has participated in over 40 jazz festivals, winning awards such as the Distant Accord Award at the Wiltern Theater, Los Angeles, conferred by the World Festival Organization in 1992, and the World Peace Movement Award in Los Angeles in 1993, accorded to performers who actively spread peace and friendship through music and arts.

From 1993 to 1997, Farid was the lead guitarist with a group called "Face First" who were the resident band of the Barn Thai Jazzaurant. The band recorded their debut album in 1997 under Universal, which was sold in 13 countries.

Besides performing, Farid lectures on jazz improvisation at the University Institute Technology Mara in Malaysia, where he has taught over 200 guitarists in 12 years. He is currently toying with the idea of pursuing a doctorate on the 3000-year-old gambus.

On his website MrGambus.com, Farid says: "Music is a gift from God. Those who choose to make a living from it, should do it with love and sincerity, for it is only then that we will be able to realize the power music has in our lives."

Fasy, whose real name is Ahmed Faseeh, hails from a musical family in the Maldives. He remembers that his father, also a well-known musician on the islands, first gave him a "beautiful, white steel-stringed acoustic guitar" when he was just 12-years-old.

He has played the guitar ever since, picking up tips and hints from various musicians and experimenting on various chord progressions and styles. He counts Ritchie Blackmore and Joe Satriani among his greatest inspirations.

"I never went for any formal training in music but let the music itself teach me and show me the way. It has always been, and still is, a fulfilling learning process," he said.

Ironically, Fasy first came to his adopted country Malaysia in late 1996, not to pursue music, but a degree in information technology. (He graduated from the Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology or APIIT in 2000.)

Just a week after his arrival in Kuala Lumpur, he met fellow musician Viji at the Concept Pub in Medan Damansara, formerly known as Centerpoint, and so began his musical journey in Malaysia.

The place became a regular jamming spot for Fasy. In 1997 he was introduced to Tony Warren, the Tom Jones of Malaysia, and performed several shows with him as his guitar player.

In late-1997 he bumped into veteran showman Bala, and also regularly jammed with him wherever he performed. Fasy's fortuitous meeting was to pave the way for Bala to perform for four years in the Maldives.

To date Fasy has performed with many famous Malaysian musicians including Paul Ponnudorai, Amir Yussof, Rafique Rashid and Purple Haze. He has also played at numerous pubs and clubs including the Backyard Pub, Titus Blues Avenue, Donnington's, Man's Café, Colours and Xtacy.

After he graduated from APIIT, Fasy formed a production studio with partners Rekha Raveenderan and Raveenderan named DigitalTones. Their debut album "Sangkeertanam - Songs to Divinity" was a hit Indian devotional album and sold over 50,000 copies in Malaysia.

They followed this up with the first Malaysian Tamil hip hop album by Boomerangx entitled "Nil Gavvanee" (Stop, watch). Boomerangx comprised three young rappers Coco Nantha, Dejavu Haree and Behug Mathan. DigitalTones also played a part in producing an album for the popular local rapper Sasi the Don.

One of the five bonus tracks on "Fasy: The Compilation" is called "Rising" which was composed and first performed by Fasy in the early 90s in Maldives with his former band The Final Revelation The band comprised Simon on bass, Azza on drums, later replaced by Ahmed, and Fasy on guitar and vocals.

The band re-introduced rock, hard rock and heavy metal to the Maldivian music scene and performed at numerous concerts and musicfests in Maldives and Sri Lanka. The Final Revelation was an inspiration for various young, new bands and its final performance in 1994 in the Maldives was recorded live on a tape.

One song from that recording, "Regenerations", has been re-mastered and included in this album.

The new version of "Rising" on the album has been re-recorded with Fasy's new three-piece band Playin December, with bandmates Rifu, on guitar and vocals, and Ayya on bass.

A second extended version of Rising is also included featuring Coco Nantha's rapping.

The two other new tracks "Steer Me Home" and "Ain't Enough" will show a different side to Fasy's music and also feature his vocals.

On his adopted home, Fasy said Malaysia is "the most perfect place in the world."

"Malaysia has got a fine balance of everything," he said. "Great people, food and music. The most beautiful thing for me is the people. It makes me really happy to see the different races living in harmony. And there is great variety of affordable food available, any time, day or night," he said.

On the Malaysian music scene Fasy commented: "I see a lot of young talent coming out and making a positive effort into creating original music and experimenting in different styles. There isn't a big market for English music by Malaysian artistes yet but it's growing and growing fast, and this is encouraging."

HE PLAYS THE YAMAHA EZ-AG2004 with no strings on the fret, just sensor pick-ups.

But that doesn't prevent Gerard Anthony from coaxing some melodious tunes that is at once infectiously soothing from this synthesized, futuristic instrument.

Gerard has been playing professionally for seven years and started playing solo for about a year and a half.

He counts among his early influences his brothers, the late Jairus Anthony, and also Backyard musical director and under-rated bassist, Edmund Anthony.

"Other musicians are Vijay David who has helped me so much in vocal coaching, although that doesn't mean I sing like him. Vishnu (of SWV) is definitely another person I admire and look up to," he said.

Gerard has a strong appreciation of country acts such as James Taylor, Michael Martin Murphy, Edwin McCain, and Lonestar and music that is "easy on the ears".

You can catch Gerard at Backyard Pub during happy hours on Fridays.

He also plays at:
Decanter Too in Sri Hartamas on Mondays.
The Reef in TTDI in March on Fridays.
Mandoline at SS3, every first Saturday of the month.
