Jamie Woon is 21-years-old and hails from SW London.
He has received consistently excellent responses from audiences on the acoustic and cabaret circuits of London. Of Scottish/Malaysian-Chinese extraction, Jamie is in Malaysia to promote his five-track EP, "How Long" and touch base with a part of his heritage.
Jamie is the 4th generation of a line of professional musicians, which includes Hugh and Ted McKenna from the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. His mother, Mae McKenna, is a folk/celtic artist and session singer.
Jamie's music has been described by The Electro Acoustic Club as "Soul-Soaked Alt. Rock", a description he says he is very comfortable with.
Jamie draws inspiration from the music of Mae McKenna, Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, The Police and Sting, John Martyn, Peter Gabriel, Muse, Jeff Buckley, Kelly Joe Phelps, Don Ross, Foo Fighters and Michael
Jackson.
Jamie's approach to the acoustic guitar is very individualistic and percussive, whilst his voice is strong, smooth and soulful. His alternative rock/soul sensibilities shines through in his dynamic, funky and emotional stage performances.
"Recently I have also been doing some songs with a loop sampler which enables me to record my voice live
on stage and then add more things on top to create the backing track live in front of the audience with a
bit of beat-boxing too. This has been going down really well with audience as there are very few people
doing this kind of thing at the moment," said Jamie.
A regular performer at The Bedford in Balham, promoter Tony Moore and founder of the Kashmir Klub had this to say about the artiste: "Jamie combines rhythm, melody and a unique singing style to create a
mesmeric melange of beautiful and compulsive music. He is an original, someone that I believe will make
his mark in a world so used to copyists and pretenders."
Jamie is here to make new fans and learn about the Malaysian music scene. He performs at Backyard on Friday, April 29th at about 9pm, and will alternate sets with current Friday band S.W.V.
